For the past six days Miss Neal has been in a trance : she manifests no aesixe tor food, and has eaten nothingduring that time except some food that has Deen forcibly administered to her. She first became in this condition in the church, and was carried home, where she has lain ever since. Occasionally she seems to come to for a moment, and murmurs strange things of what she has seen in heaven, and then relapses again into a death-like swoon. The other day .while her former school teacher was there, she became for a moment conscious, and said she had seen his mother in heaven, and she had told her that she had asked her son to pray, and she ask ed the young lady if he obeyed her wishes. Miss Neal, at last accounts, was still in a death-like trance, and the neighborhood in a fever-heat of excitement A Kain of Blood in Virginia. Bristol. Jan. 22. Mr. James M. Quillen arrived here to-day from Nick- elsville. and makes a statement, cor roborated bv the mayor ana other prominent citizens of that place, in which he affirms that yesteraay, sdouc midday, a strange cloud was seen hov ering over a half-acre field on the farm of Dr. Abram Sayler, in the lower end of Russell. In a few minutes a red shower beean to fall, and covered th ground and clothes of those who stood beneath with a red suostance wnicn could not be told from blood. Mr. Guillen's shirt front and hat were cov ered with what appeared to be blood stains. The shower lasted- about a minute, and the red stuff came down in a slow and fine drizzle. The cloud then rolled off gradually. The singular part of the occurrence is that soon in this one place the sky was clear. The phenomenon causes intense excitement amongst the colored and ignorant white people, many affirming the ap proach of the end of the world. Charlie ltoss An ex-Convicl' Pro posal A Philadelphia dispatch says: Wm. Westervelt, who was sentenced to seven vears' imprisonment on October 9. 1875. on the charge of conspiracy to kidnao and imprison Charlie Ross and extort a ransom from his family, was released to-day, having received fifteen months' commutation ror gooa De- iiavior. Westervelt was the brother- in-law of Wm. Mosher, who, with Joseph Douglass, was killed at Bay Ridge, Long Island, while attempting to rob the hause of Judge Van Urunt. Before Douglass died he confessed they were the abductors of Charlie Ross. Westervelt was induced to come to this city and tell what he knew about tbe case, and was arrested and impris oned. He stated that he does not think the child is dead, and believes that it will be restored to its parents. He intends to follow up a clew that has never been Worked, and says if lie has time he is certain of success. How to Hang a Tliennonieter. In the first place, the temperature of the wall of any building at any hour of the night or day is not the true tempera ture of the circulating air, and is of no use to science. A wood wall will radiate its heat more rapidly than brick or stone, and the amateur scientist who hangs his thermometer on a wood wall can torce his mercury down Deiow tne amateur who selects a brick wall. The Drooer wav to expose your thermome ter is to surround it with a light wod frame, covered with slats, like shutter work, and rooted over, lnis win pro tect it from the direct rays ol the sun and reflected heat. Run a light wood bar across the centre of your shelter, to which you can attach the thermome ter, which should be, when properly ex posed, on the north side of the building and at least one root irom an surround ing objects. If these directions are f ol- owed, erroneous reports oi extreme cold weather will- not hnd their way into print so often. n'omen an Drunuacrt, "Why couldn't respectable, intelli gent women sell goods by sample as neu u Luc ii : ao&o a tui l couuuutu i.
